Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers.

Doing it right

As a lifelong fan of Hammer movies it's always been a joy of mine that Van Helsing himself - not to mention Grand Moff Tarkin - Peter Cushing played with toy soldiers. So, as a little Christmas treat to those who read the blog, I hereby present to you Peter Cushing - playing with Toy Soldiers and doing it right.

May your Christmas be fruitful and may your hobby space be as civilised as his - and I hope Tamsin from wargaming girl doesn't take offence at HG Wells' paternalistic comments as so enthusiastically quoted by the British Pathe VoiceOver wallah. I'm not a girl and it caught me off guard - it never ceases to amaze me when I raid the BP archives for work the very casual sexism that permeates every single report in so way, shape or form.

  1. Wow! I have the exact same music accompanying my work, whenever I'm doing as an intelligent girl does.

When I'm doing things like a typical boy, the paintbrushes are thrown across the room and you can't hear such music for the swearing :)

  2. That's terrific. I always wear an ascot and smoke when I paint and play with soldiers. Incidentally, I saw Peter Cushing the other night in a guest spot on the first season of Space 1999, playing an alien anthropologist who kidnaps Martin Landau but soon returns him because he's so friggin boring.
I too noticed the comment about the "intelligent girl" - presumably a rarity because she's intelligent and interested in boy's things? Eeek. Today I suspect we would use the term "nerd girl".
I wonder how many famous actors today do this? Could we imagine George Clooney in an ascot playing Black Powder?
Wishing you and yours a happy and blessed Christmas.

    1. Vin Diesel plays D&D and I know Robin Williams was a big Warhammer player.

And let's be honest, wouldn't you return Martin Landau? Now Catherine Schell on the other hand, I can imagine Alien Mr Cushing taking her to his study to look at his Osprey books... Merry Christmas, Mp.
