Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers.

Space Hulk

The big victory over the summer was the completion of the new Space Hulk Set. A really lovely set of miniatures to construct and paint and the whole shebang looks lovely when it's together. Expect this to hit the table soon.

I even painted the door bases...

They're in the room!

"According to the auspex, they're already in the room...."

"That's it, Brother. Game over... Game over, man!"

Another couple of the Space Hulk Terminators. These are again, lovely miniatures to paint up and I'm really happy with how they've turned out. I'm not sure how much of that is down to my skill and how much is down to the sculpts, though.

I decided to see how the whole team would look with decent scenery...

I think they're coming together quite well.

Librarian

Another of the characters from Space Hulk. Again, quietly rather proud of this one...

The Fallen

This is one of nicest pieces from the new Space Hulk set and I used all the weathering and aging techniques I've been learning over the last year or so to really work up the age and sense of a forgotten corner of a ruined ship.

I'd really like to grime up the other Terminators but seeing as they're supposed to be elite troops it doesn't really fit. I think I'll save it for the  scenic elements of the bases on the Stealers.

Space Hulk Redux

How do I love my wife? Let me count the ways...

Given that this has been an horrific couple of years at work for me, the Good Lady She Who Must Be Obeyed decided to celebrate the light at the end of the tunnel by buying me a present. And she bought me this:

Now we all know I love Space Hulk, but this new edition is something else. The tiles are beautiful and embossed so they have texture. The rules have been left as they were with a couple of tiny tweaks. And the miniatures.... oh, the miniatures are lovely. I think they may have been GW's first foray into CAD sculpting; in any case, they are delicious.

And obviously I had to get stuck in. I undercoated all the Terminators using the airbrush and then painted the first two:

Quite proud of the little motion tracker I painted on his arm, there.

So another little fun project that should see me well into the summer.

Space Hulk: The First Mission

"They're everywhere... they're coming through the walls..."

Space Hulk is, self-evidently, one of the greatest games ever. It's also the closest you can come to living the film Aliens without shipping out to LV-426 and getting eaten. The tension of the timed rounds, the resource management of the limited action points, the suspense of the blips... it's a hectic, adrenaline soaked game for the Marine player. For the Genestealer player, it's a satisfying game of laying traps, of planning ahead and then of launching overwhelming force at the puny humans.

I like it quite a lot.

So having finally assembled the various bits and pieces for the game, I was eager to play. Thankfully, the Good Lady Er Indoors - though generally disparaging of my toy soldiers - likes a bit of boardgaming, so a bit of fast talking got us a game.

I took the marines, and she took the Genestealers. You'll recognise the first mission from the original campaign - all I had to do was fire the flamer into the room at the bottom of the map. How hard could it be?

Pretty ********* hard, it turns out.

It doesn't look that far. This should be easy.

First Squad, all nicely painted up and ready for deployment

But who's this just waiting around the corner....?

She's taking altogether too much pleasure in sliding those blips toward me, in my opinion.

Not what you want to see at the end of the corridor.

It gets worse.

"Don't worry, lads, I have a plan!"

...and then dice happened.

And the 1s just kept on coming...

...until only Sarge and the Flamer dude were left. The flamer guy has three shots left. Can the Sarge keep them off his back long enough for him to complete the mission?

Can he hell as like.

In fact, the flamer dude makes it right to the door of the final room - with one shot left. He just has to risk taking on one last Stealer in hand to hand.

And then dice happened.

It was a great game - everything that Space Hulk should be. Fast, brutal and fun. The good news is, she's agreed to play again!
